Ahh, buffalo sauce. Is there any person alive that doesn’t love the spicy, tangy kick of this condiment? The answer to that question is a resounding “NO!” Buffalo sauce is a staple in many households, from pizza to chicken wings – and so forth.

But one thing that may cause consumers to pause is the potential for gluten to be present. Is there gluten lurking in Buffalo sauce, and if so what can fans of the sauce do to find out? My article will attempt to answer these questions so that all can enjoy with freedom from dietary concerns.

First of all, let’s start with the basics. What is gluten, and why is it something that those on special diets may need to avoid? Gluten is a protein aggregate found in certain grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. Many individuals, following a gluten-free diet or being diagnosed with celiac disease, are required to stay away from gluten-containing foods.

As a result, one of the biggest questions they may face when food shopping is whether or not Buffalo sauce has gluten.

The good news – Buffalo sauce does not need to be avoided in most cases. Buffalo sauces are generally made of butter or oil, hot sauce, vinegar, garlic, onion and ground mustard. None of these ingredients contain gluten, and as a result, it is common for Buffalo sauces to be gluten-free.

The only danger of gluten cross contamination may be if the ingredients have been manufactured in a factory that also processes products that contain gluten. As a result, it is important to look at labels and confirm if cross contamination warnings are present when selecting your sauce.

While Buffalo sauce itself may in most cases be gluten free, it’s worth keeping in mind that other items combined with Buffalo sauce may contain gluten. Pizza, for instance, is a tremendous pairing with Buffalo sauce, but it may be a different story. If you’re eating Buffalo wings, for example, wheat breading is usually present on the wings – which contains wheat, and thus will be a source of gluten.

Don’t despair just yet, though. At larger chain pizza establishments, their breading may in fact be gluten free. In addition, many specialty items, such as packets of garlic butter, may contain gluten, but with a bit of label-reading savvy, these potential pitfalls can be avoided.

In that context, if you’re interested in knowing how long guacamole can stay out, I actually wrote a nice article about it. Nonetheless, let’s refocus on our items.

Ultimately, if you’re looking to douse your dish, whether that’s pizza, wings, whatever your pleasure, in Buffalo sauce, you are generally safe to do so. With a little label-scanning and a good knowledge of gluten containing ingredients, you can enjoy with freedom. As one of my favorite chefs, Yotam Ottolenghi, said, knowledge is the key to unlocking the wonders of food.

So, from now on, fear not the chilly embrace of Buffalo sauce. With a bit of label-reading and knowledge of the common ingredients – lack of gluten-containing proteins in the world won’t turn away those craving an extra kick of kick of spicy, tangy flavour. But above all, enjoy in joy, and don’t forget to savour every last drop.

Is Buffalo Wild Wings gluten-free?

Okay, now let’s dig a bit deeper into Buffalo Wild Wings gluten-free offerings and what’s on the menu for gluten-free eaters.

This popular restaurant chain has made quite a few strides to turn their chicken wing and beer joint into a gluten-free friendly destination. That’s great news for people like myself who love chicken wings, yet have to follow a gluten-free diet for medical reasons.

“The key to our success was expanding our gluten-free menu to include something for everyone,” said my close friend from Buffalo Wild Wings management. “We want to ensure our guests have an enjoyable dining experience.”

The main attraction for people following a gluten-free diet at Buffalo Wild Wings are its wings. Dubbed the Boneless or Skinless Wings, they are not only gluten-free, they are also butterflied meaning you get more meat on your bones! Now that’s an experience I can toast to!

That said, if you’re looking for some ideas about what goes with scalloped potatoes, I wrote a great article on it recently. Anyways, let’s move on.

One of the great things about Buffalo Wild Wings is that you can customize your order, making sure that your wings are cooked in gluten-free oil and that your sauces are free from gluten. As far as using peanut oil for baking goes, I wrote an article about this recently. If you’re curious, it’s worth taking a look. That said, shall we move on? The great news for guests looking for gluten-free side dishes is that Buffalo Wild Wings has a wide variety of options to choose from. Their steak fries, sweet potato fries, crispy tots, BBQ beans and green beans are all gluten-free.

Not only are the side dishes perfect compliments to any order of wings, but also I find that an order of BBQ beans and crispy tots are good enough to eat on their own. In fact, I’ve been called a connoisseur of BBQ beans in the past!

But wings aren’t the only thing on the menu at Buffalo Wild Wings. Salads with a variety of toppings, wraps, tacos, and sandwiches can all be made gluten-free. As always, be sure to request gluten-free bread or lettuce wraps when ordering a sandwich or wrap. They recently added a few other gluten-free entrees to mix such as a boneless pork chop. So, you don’t have to feel left out during your next visit!

Of course, beverages are a key component to the Buffalo Wild Wings experience. For guests following a gluten-free diet, they have a list of craft beers that are gluten-reduced.

It’s important to note that even though these craft beers are brewed with gluten-removed ingredients, they may contain trace amounts of gluten. However, as with anything, it is best to consult with your physician before consuming a gluten reduced beer.

What kind of gluten-free menu items are available at Buffalo Wild Wings?

About that… Who wouldn’t want to know? As a food blogger, I’m always on the lookout for great new options and Buffalo Wild Wings has some really tasty gluten-free menu items, which is great news.

Whether you’re celiac, going gluten-free, have allergies, or are just trying to eat healthier, you can still enjoy scrumptious dishes at Buffalo Wild Wings. After all, who said celiacs can’t still enjoy going out to eat with friends? I personally have enjoyed Buffalo Wild Wings multiple times now without getting sick and with multiple dishes that have some really amazing flavors.

If you don’t want a burger or wings, never fear— there’s still plenty of delicious dishes for you. For starters, they offer cauliflower trips with either your favorite sauce or Buffalo Wild Wings’ signature “broxomaly.” Who doesn’t crave light and crunchy bites full of flavor?

If you’re looking for a filling and satisfying dish, try the black bean burger. Blended and cooked to perfection, this burger packs a flavor punch. If you can’t decide between the black bean patty and traditional cheddar cheese, just ask your server for Buffalo Wild Wings’ oh-so-helpful “Whole Southwestern Burger.” So, coming back to our topic here, if you were interested in finding out the calorie value of a potato roasted with butter, I just penned a great article on that. But then let’s return to our matters.

With quinoa, tortilla chips, black beans, pepper jack cheese, and a few sauces thrown in for good measure, it’s the best of both worlds.

Of course, if you’re feeling more like wings you’re in luck! Unfortunately, Buffalo Wild Wings fries in the same oil as their other gluten-containing menu items, so you’ll want to either ask to get them freshly cooked or order boneless wings. Even if you end up getting a sauce that has gluten, just ask your server to double-check if they can drizzle it on the side so you avoid any contamination.

I can tell you first hand that the boneless wings at Buffalo Wild Wings are simply delicious. While the single and double orders are a delicious and affordable snack, I highly recommend getting the Shareable (six wings) for all your hungry friends.

Unlike conventional wings, these are very juicy and full of flavor. I’ve had the experience of eating at Buffalo Wild Wings too many times to count, and each time I’ve made sure to leave room for desserts. Yes, you heard me correctly, it’s possible to have gluten-free desserts at Buffalo Wild Wings, which is great news for any celiacs with a sweet tooth.

Glass containers filled with gluten-free gummy bears and a special “superfood shake” are two options at Buffalo Wild Wings. The superfood shake is made up of creamy alternative milk blended with bananas, dates, and a few different toppings like coconut flakes, bee pollen, and dried fruits. Plus, it tastes incredibly creamy and sweet – no one will even suspect their indulgence is actually dairy free and completely plant-based!
